How to prepare for labor?
When we observe the first symptoms of approaching labor, it is worth starting preparations. It is good to gather clean towels, hygienic pads, sterile gloves and disinfected scissors. This is also a good time to check which nearest veterinary facility we should go to if complications occur.
The second stage begins when full dilation occurs and pushing contractions appear. This is also the time when the waters break. The female dog lies on her side and the expulsion of the fetuses begins. It may be accompanied by irregular breathing, and vomiting may also occur. Puppies are born at different intervals. If these intervals do not exceed two hours, the labor is considered to be progressing normally.
The third stage is expulsion of the placentas, but with a larger number of puppies, the second and third stages occur alternately. Usually, the placenta is expelled about 5 to 15 minutes after a puppy is born.
