Transporting an animal abroad

Every animal transported across EU country borders must have identification – in the form of an electronic chip or tattoo (if it was done before July 3, 2011).

If you are the owner of an animal other than a cat, dog or ferret, check the country-specific regulations governing the entry/export of animals from that country.

What documents do I need to have?

An important document when traveling abroad is the Animal Passport. It must contain appropriate details about the owner and the animal, including the identification number and current vaccinations. Such a passport may be issued by a veterinarian with the appropriate authorization.

In addition, every animal must have a current rabies vaccination. In the case of the first vaccination or revaccination after more than one year, it becomes valid after 21 days. Each booster dose given within one year of the previous one becomes valid on the day it is administered (in accordance with European Commission Decision 2005/91/EC of 2 February 2005). This vaccination must be performed after the animal has been identified. In the case of vaccination of previously identified animals, the veterinarian is required to verify that the identification matches the data in the passport.
